Have you ever prayed for something, only to have t Have you ever prayed for something, only to have the Lord answer in a way you never expected?

I had always wanted children, but life had not included them. When I married Roger at 41, I became a stepmother to his two grown children, Ashley and Kris.

I was thrilled, but also worried. Would they accept me? Would they learn to love me? What was my role to be? Friend? Their dad's wife? What?

I wanted them to know I honored their mother and wasn't trying to step into her role.

Before our wedding, I asked Ashley and Kris if they would like to participate. Both offered to sing, and Ashley suggested "The Rose," one of my favorite songs. She had no idea how much I loved it.

It was the sign I wished for.

In the beginning, getting to know someone who is now family through only brief visits was a challenge. I fretted about what I said. My mother always gave meaningful advice: "Just be yourself."

I read, talked with other mothers in stepfamily situations, and prayed.

My role? Simply to love them. Listen, cheer their joys, commiserate with their challenges and hurts. Love them.

I know I made mistakes along the way. Fortunately, year after year, we've become a genuine family.

I remember the first time Ashley said "my parents," referring to me and Roger. I almost cried.

And the day I held our grandchildren in my arms, I wept tears of gratitude.

The Lord answered my prayers. Not what I expected, but much more than I could've dreamed.

Have you ever looked back and realized God answered a prayer differently than you imagined?
How many emails do you receive a day? It seems I s How many emails do you receive a day? It seems I spend more and more time reading emails, text messages, and internet news than I really care to do.

Yet what a special surprise it is to open one's physical mailbox and discover a handwritten letter or card. Knowing someone took the time to write a note makes that small piece of paper so meaningful. Something we can hold in our hands and always treasure.

A few years ago, I had the privilege of delivering a very special letter on a very special day.

My niece was turning eighteen, a milestone made especially significant because she had overcome many physical challenges to reach that age.

My mother, who had passed away eleven years earlier, recognized that she might not be around to celebrate her granddaughter's birthday, so she wrote her a letter. She entrusted me to keep it until the occasion.

Along with her note, she'd included several coins honoring women who made a difference and a president who gave our country hope.

She wrote, "It's important to remember that your choices are for you to make. Find something you like to do and then work will seem like play and an extension of yourself."

My husband and I traveled to California to deliver the letter in person. My niece jumped up and down when I told her what her Grammy had left her. After I read it, we both shed tears.

Such a legacy, a love letter written to her long before she was eighteen.

There are moments in life that connect, guide, and inspire us. As Thanksgiving approaches, I'm grateful for those who have gone before us and for the wisdom they've left behind.

What legacy should we leave the next generations?
With Halloween approaching, I'm reminded of a deli With Halloween approaching, I'm reminded of a delightful surprise my husband and I encountered while vacationing in Arizona a few years ago.

After an early morning walk, we stopped by a local "dive" diner our son recommended. As the waitress approached, I noticed she was wearing a tiara, had unicorn emblems on her fanny pack, and dragonfly earrings!

I asked if she was a Queen, but she said she was a Princess. She wore her tiara every day, not just for special occasions.

She explained that for Halloween, the staff had told her she couldn't wear her "normal" outfit, so she had to dress as something else. She came as the Good Witch instead and winked at us.

When we were ready to order, she heartily recommended the blueberry pancakes, and yes, they were incredibly awesome!

What started as a normal "fuel up" meal turned into a memorable experience.

Have you ever had a "normal" expectation transform into something extraordinary?

Sometimes it's just the small things that can make a memory of a lifetime.

Who could have envisioned encountering The Pancake Princess in a small town in Arizona?
