    • My husband and I once celebrated a wedding anniver My husband and I once celebrated a wedding anniversary by returning to the church where we were married. Even with careful planning, something can go awry—the 100-year-old church had no AC, it was 97 degrees, and the ceiling fans didn't work. I was so caught up in concern for our guests that, for a moment, it distracted me. But when I walked down the aisle arm in arm with him, the joy and the gravitas of the ceremony enveloped me. Despite the inconvenience, we felt blessed to be surrounded by the love of dear friends. One has to think of what other commitments we have made. How often do we make a serious pledge of love, time, or talent—to family or friends, to a faith? What is so worthy that we will commit to it? And for how long?     Character is revealed when pressure is applied. " Character is revealed when pressure is applied. "We know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His Love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us." Romans 5:3-5 After 35+ years in Corporate America, perseverance was something I began to understand through challenging times, especially reorganizations and layoffs. I learned how important character was in motivating and supporting people, especially in the hard times. Character is not something you can learn from a class or a video. It is built over time. Character is revealed when pressure is applied. David Horsager lists five ways to build character: Be humble — humility is the beginning of wisdom. Live out your principles and values. Be intentional — integrity does not happen by accident. Practice self-discipline — do what is right over what is easy. Be accountable — surround yourself with people who have high expectations, lose the pride, and open yourself up to accountability. What I would add: Sharing the Light. Always give credit where it is due. Make those around you feel valued. I memorized Romans 5 a long time ago. It reminds me of a saying my mother used to tell me when I was going through something very challenging. She'd make me a cup of tea in her Staffordshire China cup and say, "It adds metal to the alloy, dear." I always wanted to respond, "But I have enough metal." These verses feel like our progression of life. We all go through trials that sometimes last longer than we would want. Yet these trials build our abilities to cope, which builds our character that leads to hope. What have you learned about character? What would you add to the list?
