A Prayer for Memorial Day
“The memory of the righteous is a blessing.” Proverbs 10:7
One of my most memorable Memorial Day experiences was listening silently to a 21-gun salute, standing in deference to all those who have given their lives in service. In that silence, you feel the reverence for those gone too early, the families and friends left behind.
For many of us, this day is not just a date on the calendar—it’s a moment to honor stories of courage, sorrow, love, and sacrifice.
Whether you have a name etched in your heart or simply want to offer gratitude and reflection, may this prayer be a space for remembrance, healing, and hope.
A Memorial Day Prayer
Dear God of all creation,
We come before You today to recognize the sacrifices that others have made for us without thought of reward, and for some, paying the ultimate price with their lives. We honor and are grateful for their love.
We lift up the families who carry their memories daily.
Comfort them in their quiet moments of grief,
And bless them with the knowledge that their loved one’s courage is not forgotten.
Lord, in a world still scarred by conflict, teach us to walk in the ways of peace.
May their stories inspire us to live with compassion,
To serve where we are needed,
And to remember that every life given holds sacred worth in Your sight.
We pray for peace. We long for healing.
And we trust in the promise that no act of love is ever lost.
In the name of Jesus, who died for us,
Amen.
This Memorial Day, may we do more than remember.
May we listen.
May we tell the stories.
May we live lives worthy of the sacrifices made.
If there’s someone you remember today, please share their story so we can honor them.
